William Boughton Appointed 10th Music Director of New Haven Symphony Orchestra

April 17, 2007, New Haven, CT. The New Haven Symphony Orchestra (NHSO) is pleased to announce the appointment of internationally-renowned conductor William Boughton as its new Music Director effective July 1, 2007. Mr. Boughton becomes the NHSO's tenth music director in its 113-year history.

"It is a great honor to be the New Haven Symphony Orchestras next Music Director, and I relish the opportunity to work with the Musicians, Administration and Board in developing its role, both within the local community and in its wider potential to build an Orchestra that the region can be proud of," remarked Mr. Boughton.

NHSO President James T. Morley, Jr. noted, "William's appointment presents an extraordinary opportunity for the artistic growth of our Orchestra and an equally exciting chapter in the strengthening and diversification of our education and community engagement programs."

William Boughton has guest conducted with many of the world's leading orchestras from San Francisco to Helsinki. As Founder, Artistic and Music Director with the English Symphony Orchestra (ESO), Boughton developed the Orchestra's repertoire through the Viennese classics to contemporary music. Together he and the ESO built an impressive discography of internationally-acclaimed recordings with Nimbus Records, a number of which have reached the Top Ten in the US charts.

Of the New Haven appointment, Adrian Farmer, Director of Nimbus Records remarked, "…the partnership between William Boughton, the ESO, and Nimbus Records produced a rich harvest of recordings, which established an international reputation for both the company and the conductor. Nimbus looks forward to a continued 'Trans-Atlantic' partnership."

Mr. Boughton's accomplishments resonate the world over and include: his role as Artistic and Music Director of the Jyvaskyla Sinfonia in Finland, 1986-93 where audiences grew by over 60% during his tenure; his leadership role, now in its second term, as Artistic Director of the Malvern Festival; and his appointment as Artistic Director of The Nimbus Foundation, in 2000, which resulted in the creation of the Wyastone Summer Series, now a major summer Festival which is the subject of several BBC broadcasts each year.

He has worked with many leading soloists on the international circuit, including artists such as Nigel Kennedy, Leonidas Kavakos, Emmanuel Ax, Radu Lupu and Viktoria Mullova. His list of commissioned works from contemporary composers includes Peter Sculthorpe, John Joubert, Anthony Powers, Michael Berkeley, John Metcalf, Stephen Roberts and Adrian Williams among many others.

In October 1993, Maestro Boughton was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Coventry University. He has participated in a number of high profile arts programs for BBC Television, and is currently writing a book - 'The Art of the Re-Creative Artist', with input from many world famous performing artists from all genres. Mr. Boughton is represented by CHL Artists of Beverly Hills, CA.
